چکیده

The dichromatic number ~ χ(D) of a digraph D is the least number k such that the vertex set of D can be partitioned into k parts each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. Introduced by Neumann-Lara in 1982, this digraph invariant shares many properties with the usual chromatic number of graphs and can be seen as the natural analog of the graph chromatic number. In this paper, we study the list dichromatic number of digraphs, giving evidence that this notion generalizes the list chromatic number of graphs. We first prove that the list dichromatic number and the dichromatic number behave the same in many contexts, such as in small digraphs (by proving a directed version of Ohba’s Conjecture), tournaments, and random digraphs. We then consider bipartite digraphs, and show that their list dichromatic number can be as large as Ω(log2 n). We finally give a Brooks-type upper bound on the list dichromatic number of digon-free digraphs.

Gallai's Theorem for List Coloring of Digraphs

A classical theorem of Gallai states that in every graph that is critical for k-colorings, the vertices of degree k − 1 induce a tree-like graph whose blocks are either complete graphs or cycles of odd length. We provide a generalization to colorings and list colorings of digraphs, where some new phenomena arise. In particular, the problem of list coloring digraphs with the lists at each vertex...

Brooks-type Results for Coloring of Digraphs

In the thesis, the coloring of digraphs is studied. The chromatic number of a digraph D is the smallest integer k so that the vertices of D can be partitioned into at most k sets each of which induces an acyclic subdigraph. A set of four topics on the chromatic number is presented. First, the dependence of the chromatic number of digraphs on the maximum degree is explored. An analog of Gallai’s...

Majority Choosability of Digraphs

A majority coloring of a digraph is a coloring of its vertices such that for each vertex v, at most half of the out-neighbors of v have the same color as v. A digraph D is majority k-choosable if for any assignment of lists of colors of size k to the vertices there is a majority coloring of D from these lists. We prove that every digraph is majority 4-choosable. This gives a positive answer to ...

Small H-Coloring Problems for Bounded Degree Digraphs

An NP-complete coloring or homomorphism problem may become polynomial time solvable when restricted to graphs with degrees bounded by a small number, but remain NP-complete if the bound is higher. For instance, 3-colorability of graphs with degrees bounded by 3 can be decided by Brooks’ theorem, while for graphs with degrees bounded by 4, the 3-colorability problem is NP-complete. We investigat...

Hypergraph Extension Of The Alon-Tarsi List Coloring Theorem

An Eulerian subgraph in a digraph is a subgraph in which indegree equals outdegree at each vertex. Alon and Tarsi [2] proved that a graph is d-choosable when it has an orientation that has no vertex of outdegree at least d and has the property that the numbers of Eulerian subgraphs with even-sized and odd-sized edge sets differ. We generalize this theorem to k-uniform hypergraphs, where k is pr...
